The Charleston area is known for a number of things:
Rich history, architecture, and culture
Striking waterways
A really questionable reality show
Being an absolute foodie's paradise
With new hot and trendy restaurants popping up on every street corner in every part of the Lowcountry, my husband and I thought it high time to give a little extra love to our favorite tried-and-true Mt. Pleasant restaurants.
We've lived and worked in Mount P for years, and this is our gratitude post for those neighborhood gems that keep us full and happy.
Whether you're on the hunt for a romantic date night spot away from the chaos of downtown Charleston, looking for an authentic family-owned Mt. Pleasant restaurant, or just in the mood for some darn good takeout, we hope you love these local gems as much as we do. Bon appetit!
Mt. Pleasant Restaurants: Must-Try Local Gems
Nick’s German Kitchen
Nick's German Kitchen is a hip little hideaway located near the base of the IOP connector. The recently rebranded, all-black-and-white eatery dishes up delicious schnitzels and spaetzles, and if you catch the plum cake on the dessert specials, you'd better order it. You can thank me later!
This Mt. Pleasant restaurant is a beloved favorite among locals, so reservations are a great idea, especially when the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor seating.

Square Onion
Are you looking for a delicious lunch on the go? Look no further than the Square Onion. Tucked away in Mt. Pleasant's scenic I'on neighborhood, the Square Onion offers friendly walk-up window service with a well-rounded menu of elevated deli fare.
Order a buffalo shrimp wrap (my favorite), the Sassafras, or the Goose, (or try the pick-two option if you can't decide!) and chow down at a picnic table under the oak tree - lunch on the go doesn't get better than this!
The Square Onion is also known for their tasty take-home casseroles and soups. When our days are really hectic, I'll bring home a quart of frozen and fresh soup to make life a little easier!

The Wine Bar
I love me a wine bar, especially one with cozy vibes and tasty snacks. Aptly named The Wine Bar, our go-to date night spot is nestled into a corner of the Belle Hall shopping center, a convenient two doors down from Amalfi's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, which you'll also find on this list of beloved Mt. Pleasant restaurants.
The extensive and interesting wine list is obviously the star of the show, but y'all, let's talk about those miniature cheesecakes. These housemade delights are perfectly sized, not too sweet, and utterly delicious. We've been known to skip dessert at all sorts of restaurants to grab mini cheesecakes at The Wine Bar on the way home.
The Wine Bar menu also offers yummy flatbreads (get the Prosciutto one), gourmet meats and cheeses (order the St. Andre), and a sassy French onion soup.

Amalfi’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria
Nothing in this world compares to a big, comforting bowl of pasta with homemade marinara, especially when that marinara is from Amalfi’s. My husband loves their spaghetti and Greek salad, but my go-to is the Penne a la Siciliana. Basically, everything is delicious, and you can’t beat the price: every dinner entree comes with freshly baked bread (be careful, it’s addictive!) and a soup or salad. We always leave with full tummies and hearts and a to-go box full of leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch.
This laidback Mt. Pleasant restaurant is conveniently located a couple of doors down from The Wine Bar, another one of our regular spots!

Pattaya Thai Restaurant
If you’re in the mood for Thai food, Pattaya Thai is hard to beat. They offer flavorful and familiar favorites like Thai salads, larb, tom ka, tom yum, curries, and delightfully spicy noodle dishes. Their dining room recently reopened, but Pattaya Thai became our go-to takeout spot during the pandemic.
I usually order fresh spring rolls, tom ka with shrimp, or green curry, and my husband loves the Neua Pad Prik and Pad Kee Mao.

La Pizzeria
You’ll find some of the best Italian food in Mt. Pleasant tucked into the corner of an unassuming shopping center at La Pizzeria. This family-owned establishment takes great pride in their lovingly crafted cuisine, and it’s absolutely delicious.
The pizza is, of course, noteworthy at La Pizzeria, but the pasta (and warm, authentic atmosphere) is what keeps me coming back time and time again.

Mì Xào
Sometimes, you just want a hot, satisfying bowl of pho without all the bells and whistles (and parking problems) of a bougie, over-priced downtown restaurant. Described as a “Vietnamese cafe and take away,” Mì Xào dishes up substantial portions of tasty Vietnamese classics from their unpretentious storefront.
My husband craves Mì Xào’s London Broil Pho almost weekly, and I alternate between the fresh summer rolls with shrimp and Coco’s salad.
Whether you’re planning a Netflix-and-chill date night or you’re looking for a quick, solid meal at the outdoor bistro tables, you’re sure to end your meal feeling full, satisfied, and looking forward to some Mì Xào leftovers tomorrow.
